Throwback Thursday: Journal #3

Journal #3: 2008-2009
"Today I enjoyed PE for some reason. I don't usually. But today we did baseball. I guess I enjoyed it because I haven't played in a long time. It was a mystery who won though because Coach mixed up the scores..."

Wow, this passage from my journal totally makes me look like a kid who hated sports and being outside. I swear I wasn't! I think I just wasn't quite as tolerate of the heat at that age, and I was very picky with the outdoor activities I chose to take part in. PE was held in the middle of the day, in the South Florida heat, so naturally a lot of kids did not enjoy being out in an open field at that time. I have tons of fond memories of PE in elementary school. If I remember correctly the sport we had done before this one was soccer, which was not a sport I would have preferred. Switching it up for a day of baseball apparently please me...

The Wedding Weekend

Where art thou, Rapunzel?
The newest edition to our family: Stephanie!
My whole family had been waiting on this moment for literally ten years.
One of my favorite cousins, love you Emily!
Sometimes my brother and I can take nice pictures.

This last weekend was spent celebrating a relationship through the union of marriage. My cousin, Johnny, married his long time girlfriend, Stephanie. I would say welcome to the family, but she was already part of it.

In a way, this wedding became a family reunion. I finally got to see some of the family members, that I grew up very close too, and had not seen in over 2 years. While I looked forward to seeing everyone in my family, I especially looked forward to seeing my cousin, Emily. The last time we had seen each other was the summer before our senior year of high school. We went to Pickwick for the Fourth of July and then to church camp together. We are very close, and sometimes it gets really hard being so far away.

My family has always been pretty spread out. As a kid, I would sometimes become jealous of all my friends who's families lived in the same city as they did. They got to see their aunts, uncles, and cousins all the time. Maybe one day we won't lived so far away from each other, but I guess for now cellphones and Facebook will just have to do...
I just had to show off my favorite Lauren James dress.
My mom cut out my legs because she thought the fern was pretty...
If you look closely, you can see the tan lines from my one piece swimsuit I wore all summer at camp.
The wedding was at Bok Tower Gardens, so I decided that my favorite black and white gingham Lauren James dress would be appropriate. I paired the dress with my black Coach pumps and my Brighten pearls.

For the reception, I changed into a Black & White dress with faux snake skin Nine West heels.

Yes, the hotel was decorated for Christmas even though Thanksgiving has not passed yet.

Throwback Thursday: Journal #2

2006-2008
"On Wednesday we went to Chimny Rock. It was so cool! The rock was so high up! On the way back to the parking lot we could hike back or take the elevator. I hiked back. It was cool.
Hannah and I split our money to buy a box of taffy. On the way to the restaurant I had a piece of taffy and it made my tooth come out! It wasn't even loose! It started to bleed a lot, I hate the taste of blood. I got blood on my new pants! Sad me. I hope it comes out. I put my tooth under my pillow but the tooth fairy didn't come when I check this morning nothing was there. So I will just wait."

Every time I read old journal entries, I cringe at the lack of quality writing and the embarrassing content. Then again, I was in elementary school, so what can we really expect? Please note the run-on sentences, referencing myself in 3rd person, me not sparing the gory details of my tooth coming out, and my lack of ability to find a synonym for "cool." If I remember correctly this was the experience that made me low key realize that the tooth fairy was not real. There was also a  following experience where I lost my tooth at girl scout camp that confirmed my suspicions.

Keep a look out for next weeks Throwback Thursday, because they are finally back!

Taking Up Old Habits: Reading

Here we are, in the middle of fall semester, getting slammed with school work and midterms. I don't think I have ever had so much school work before in my life... and it is severely showing in my lack of blogging. It is severely showing in my lack of doing most of the stuff that I enjoy, the stuff that keeps me sane. As you can imagine, that saddens me.

While I do not necessarily have time to go lay out by the pool or go sailing on the lake as often as I usually would, I have taken up one habit that I had lost for a very long time. This was my attempt to squeeze in something that I missed dearly: reading. It takes me a lot longer to get through a book these days because I usually only read about a chapter a night, sometimes less if it is a long one. As long as I read a little bit, it satisfies my need. Some nights all I am able to read, before completely passing out, are a few pages, but it is better than nothing. I have also developed a fear that my quality of writing/creative flow of ideas has slowed due to my lack of reading. I used to read about a book a week, sometimes more and sometimes less, and I was constantly learning. Sometimes I would learn more about the punctuation and grammar end of writing in books while other days a story would inspire my creative thoughts and leave me digging my brain for my own cool ideas.

Along with reading, I wrote constantly. I used my ideas in my writings for school, for journaling, for creating my own stories. Of course anything I created at the time probably wasn't anything special due to the fact that I was quite a bit younger than I am now, but at least I kept up with my passions. The older I get, the more I feel like I have less time to do the things that I really enjoy.

You are probably wondering why I have a picture of the book Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert pictured above. Well, I originally sat down to give a bit of a review of the book. In away, what I have already written here is the review. The book is about a depressed woman who, after going through a nasty divorce, sets off on a mission to find herself while traveling around the world to Italy, India, and Bali. The book shows her journey as she goes from being at one of the worst points of her life to learning how to be completely at peace with herself and her life. It is an inspiring story that I encourage everyone to read. I randomly selected this book to restart my love of reading daily and it turned out to be the perfect choice. I happened to pick it up for less than a dollar at Goodwill and I feel like I wasn't meant to pick it up until now. It was like God knew I was going to reach a point in the semester where I would need words like that to give me hope and keep me going.

I think that what I am getting at here is that if you are reaching that point in the semester, or even that point with anything, take a breather and do something you love. Go see a movie, pick up a book, hang out with friends, make cookies... whatever you need to do you should do it! It will make you feel better, I promise.

Big/Little Reveal 2016

Big Tay and Little Hannah!
Top to Bottom: Sarah Beth, Margaret, Me, and Hannah!
Oh hot fam!
Left to Right: Little, Big, and I!
Nothin like that fake candid pic!
Big/Little Reveal was a week ago and it was SO exciting! I'm a big! It was so weird to get a little, I didn't feel like I was old enough to be a big. I am used to being one of the babies of the family, but not anymore! It was so great to bring more girls into my HUGE Phi Mu fam. I can't wait to watch them grow and become initiated members of our fraternity. We have a full year of chapter meetings, philanthropy events, and fun socials to look forward to as sisters. Sophomore year is really kicking up for me, so I am happy to have my fam to lean on and have a good time with when I need to forget about the stress of school.

Love my fam as well as the rest of my awesome sisters!

6 Staple Makeup Products that Every Girl Should Have

Just a few of my top favorite products I discuss in this post!
These are some makeup products that I view to be a staple in every girls makeup collection!  If you can, I recommend the high end products in most cases over the drugstore. In general, I tend to stay away from drugstore products as much as I can just because I tend to not like the quality as much, however there are some exceptions out there.

Bronzer: When I get asked what my favorite piece of makeup is I always say bronzer right away. If I am wearing makeup, I pretty much always have on at least a touch of bronzer as well. I love having a warm glow, especially when I start to lose my summer tan. Having a good bronzer is a staple for me. It helps to add warmth and definition to your face and can be lightly applied or used to contour for a more dramatic look.

My favorite bronzers...
Drugstore: NYC Smooth Skin Bronzing Powder in Sunny - $3.62
High-End: Urban Decay Beached Bronzer in Bronzed - $28.00

Foundation & BB Cream: For those of you who are blessed with beautiful skin, you can ignore this. But for those of us who tend to have problems, having a good foundation and BB Cream option is always ideal. When I go out I like to have a foundation that will cover most of the problem areas on my face. I don't usually like to get a full coverage one because they tend to feel heavy on my face and ends up being uncomfortable for me. I also don't have issues bad enough with my skin to wear I need it. However, for more of an every day wear or for when my skin is looking particularly nice, I go for a BB cream. They tend to be a lot better for your skin than a full on foundation and still give some coverage. When I get products for my face, I tend to seek out those that work best with oily skin, so keep that in mind when looking at the products listed bellow!

My favorite foundation...
Drugstore: Rimmel London Stay Matte Mousse Foundation - $4.99
High-End: Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Makeup - $40.00

My favorite BB Creams...
Drugstore: Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream - $8.99
High-End: Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12 Hour Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 - $36.00

Concealer: Again, some people have great skin and won't need this, but most of us do. If you had to pick one thing to spend the most money on, it should be this. Whether your problem is acne spots or your under eyes, keep a nice concealer on deck at all times. I was never huge with under eye concealer, but I like to have something to dot on blemishes. One of the reasons that I am comfortable going for a lighter coverage foundation is because I know that anything that doesn't get covered by that will get hit by my concealer. I am very picky with my concealer so I usually recommend high end over drugstore concealer, but I do have a drugstore option for anyone on a budget.

My favorite concealers...
Drugstore: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Concealer & Treatment - $7.99
Cover Girl Ready Set Gorgeous Concealer - $7.99
High-End: Too Faced Born This Way Naturally Radiant Concealer - $28.00
Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer - $28.00

A Neutral Makeup Palette:
This kind of palette should be a staple in every girls makeup collection. Neutrals go with EVERYTHING. When in doubt, go neutral! Most of my makeup palette's are different kinds of neutrals. Find the best type of shades that you feel look best on your face and invest in a good palette. I have noticed that I tend to prefer warm neutrals on my face, especially since I love bronzer so much. If you have absolutely no idea what to get, I recommend starting out with something like the Naked Basics Palette from Urban Decay. For this, I will not be providing a drugstore option only because I have not tried one that I feel like can even come close to the quality of high-end eyeshadow. The Naked Basics palette will give you colors that you can't go wrong with and will fit great in makeup bags for when you are traveling! The colors allow you to do a light, daytime look and then you can easily darken it up for a nighttime look.

My favorite neutral makeup palettes...
Urban Decay Naked Basics - $29.00
Urban Decay Naked Palettes 1,2, and 3 - $54.00 each
Too Faced The Chocolate Bar Eye Palette - $49.00

Primer:
While other girls worry about their makeup running off of their face in the heat of South Florida, I know that mine (for the most part) stays in place all because of my primer. Almost every day, I make sure that before I put on any makeup I apply both a face and eye primer. This is also something that I tend to invest more money in and will not be providing a drugstore option for (mostly because I have never tried a drugstore primer before). When I first started using primer I wasn't sure if it was really working at all or not. Since I have always struggled with oily skin, especially when I was in high school, it makes it easy for my makeup to slide off by the end of the day. However, I started getting friends commenting on how my makeup was still on at the end of the day, or after we had been doing something out in the florida heat, sweating like crazy. Now that I know how well it works, I can tell people my secret to making my makeup last!

My favorite primers...
Smashbox Pore Minimizing Photo Finish Foundation Primer - $36.00
Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion - $20.00

Mascara:
When I first started wearing makeup, I absolutely hated mascara, but then I saw what it could do to my lashes and learned to love it. I can't image wearing any makeup and not having mascara on. I like to keep at least three staple mascaras in my collection at all times: a natural looking one for every day wear, a bold, fake-lash mascara for more dramatic looks or going out at night, and a decent waterproof one.
My favorite mascaras...
Drugstore: For a natural lash look... Maybelline Voluminous Butterfly Lengthening Mascara - $8.99
For a bold lash look... Maybelline Volum ' Express The Rocket Mascara - $6.99
For a waterproof look... Covergirl Exact Eyelights Waterproof Mascara - $7.29
High-End: For a more natural lash look... Benefit They're Real! Mascara - $24.00
For a bold lash look... Benefit Roller Lash Mascara - $24.00
For a waterproof look... Mary Kay Lash Love Waterproof Mascara - $15.00

How to Survive Freshman Year: Sorority Edition

  1. School is your first priority either way, but ESPECIALLY in a sorority. Remember that you can't even be in it unless you keep your grades up. The higher the GPA the better your chapter looks. It's cool to be smart in college, I promise. Go to class, do all the homework, and study A LOT. Most sororities have study rooms that you can attend and once finals gets close you are basically guaranteed to find a sister in the library at all times. Also, do yourself a favor and purchase yourself a cute little agenda because how else will you keep track of all the fun events coming up this school year? Oh yeah and dont forget to add in all of the due dates for your homework!
  2. Oh, the parties. Please keep your priorities straight.  If you need to stay in and study, do it. There will always be another party. If you feel pressured to drink but aren't into it or just aren't feeling it that night, don't do it. Be smart and always have a DD or an uber app that is all set up and ready to go.
  3. Socials. Oh yes, the socials. They are a fun time, but don't be that one girl that gets the entire chapter in trouble. She knows who she is (and so does everyone else). The one who gets way to drunk at the pregame and throws up all over the floor the second we get to the venue. It's not cute. Know your limits, or just dont drink at all. It is still possible to have a ton of fun without alcohol. Please respect the social chair and follow any guidelines that they have. If you don't, things could get messy. You could end up at a cool venue and then never be allowed back because y'all got a little to rowdy, resulting in getting kicked out.
  4. Boy oh BOYS. Another thing many girls look forward to is seeing all the cute fraternity guys. PLEASE dont get consumed by them. They aren't greek gods, they are just in greek life. Just normal guys, trying to have a good time. My best advice is to avoid serious dating your freshman year. If you are already single, chill out and stay that way. Have a good time with sisters and friends without the worries of a boy waiting in the wings. Half of them only want to hook up anyway. No offense to the guys who might be reading this, but I'm sure you would agree that freshman year should be about having fun with friends instead of worrying about a relationship.
  5. Social Media: As cute as the pic from last friday might be, even with a red solo cup in it, do yourself a favor and don't post it. Social media is a huge factor in greek life with how we present ourselves. We already have huge targets on our backs and society loves to catch us in any way that they can. So lets not give them a reason to by keeping social media cute and classy!
  6. Wear those letters with pride! You are a sorority woman and you have standards to uphold. This is a time where you can really step up your character. You ALWAYS represent your sisterhood with everything you do. This isn't meant to intimidate you, but once you are associated with a sorority it becomes part of how people remember you. If someone has a bad experience with you, not only does it make you look bad, but it could make your entire sorority look bad.
  7. Go to ALL of the events you can! Try new things and push yourself! Join your sororities intramural flag football team! Compete in step off! Do something, or even everything! This is a great chance to try something new, something that high school you may not have done. As a freshman you most likely have a much more free time than the older girls do. Go to all the events and represent your sisterhood! By doing this you will make a TON of new friends. From older sisters, girls in your pledge class, to people in other greek organizations.
  8. Get close with your Big, and the rest of your fam as well! I got lucky enough to find an amazing Big who played a huge roll in my life freshman year. I got even more lucky to be brought into a huge family that supported each other. This is a group of girls who will be there for you and watch your back, take advantage of that and spend as much time as you can with them. If you are like me, they will be who you end up hanging out with most of the time anyway.
  9. Take a ton of pics, like WAY more than you think you need. Capture the good times with sisters and friends to remember forever (and also to send to your PR chair when the time comes for cute pictures to be posted).
  10. Chill out, its freshman year. Stay focused, but have fun! If you are having trouble with anything remember that your sisters have your back. Anytime you need advice there is almost always a sister who can help you out.
